What are Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling and Psychotherapy are talking therapies, they provide an opportunity for people to talk through difficulties in their lives, gain insight and awareness and, ultimately, overcome their problems.

There is a large body of evidence to show that change in therapy happens through having a supportive, respectful and genuine relationship with the therapist, which allows the client to be heard and supported and safe enough to be challenged, when appropriate.

Counselling and psychotherapy are conducted in a confidential and safe environment, with a trained and experienced practitioner. Sessions usually take place at the same time and day each week for 50 minutes, to provide a containing environment.

Counselling Vs Psychotherapy

The terms 'Counselling' and 'Psychotherapy' are often used interchangeably. Traditionally psychotherapy was on a longer term basis and explored issues in greater depth, whereas counselling was more short term and goal-focussed. However it is possible to have short term psychotherapy and long term counselling, depending on the modality of an individual therapist.

I am able to work in a way that involves exploring issues in further depth and I am also able to work in a more solution-focussed way. The length of the therapy will depend on your individual needs.
